Renovation of a 5 floor canal house
Located on the wonderful Leidsegracht canal in Amsterdam, this project involved a complete renovation of the homes five floors. Usually Amsterdam houses are long and narrow, however this house is wider than it is long giving it a panorama over the canal and light from both sides to make up for a small floor area.
However as a small floor plan we needed to find more space – the basement was stripped and a new heated floor was introduced creating a cozy lounge. Above this a more formal living space, kitchen, dining and main entrance to the house. Above this are two floors of bedrooms and bathrooms. However the biggest change was bringing the attic into the home – raising the ceiling and altering the roof beams meant we could make an extra room with en-suite, while the home owners benefit from an extra 25m2 to their house
This was a careful project where we strengthened the character and original features of the house while using all the tricks and tips from our work on smaller houses to make the most of the space and create a home that works for a busy family of three children. it exemplifies the don’t move improve ethos while adding significantly to the homes valuation.
